NANGA is the kind of company you only find in Japan: a family business in a small town that has spent decades perfecting one thing. That thing is down. Today its jackets are worn in Tokyo, Seoul and Paris, and they show up in collaborations with labels such as Maison Kitsuné and Alpha Industries.

NANGA est le genre d'entreprise qu'on ne trouve qu'au Japon : une affaire familiale dans une petite ville, qui a passé des décennies à perfectionner une seule chose. Cette chose, c'est le duvet. Aujourd'hui, ses vestes se portent à Tokyo, Séoul et Paris, et apparaissent dans des collaborations avec des labels comme Maison Kitsuné et Alpha Industries.

A workshop in Shiga
NANGA comes from Maibara in Shiga Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Ibuki, east of Lake Biwa. It began as a small sewing workshop and became known in Japan for its sleeping bags. The name is borrowed from Nanga Parbat, one of the great Himalayan peaks.
NANGA kommt aus Maibara in der Präfektur Shiga, am Fuss des Ibuki, östlich des Biwa-Sees. Angefangen hat es als kleine Nähwerkstatt, bekannt wurde es in Japan mit Schlafsäcken. Der Name ist vom Nanga Parbat geliehen, einem der grossen Gipfel des Himalaya.
NANGA vient de Maibara, dans la préfecture de Shiga, au pied du mont Ibuki, à l'est du lac Biwa. L'entreprise a commencé comme petit atelier de couture et s'est fait connaître au Japon pour ses sacs de couchage. Le nom est emprunté au Nanga Parbat, l'un des grands sommets de l'Himalaya.
NANGAは滋賀県米原市、琵琶湖の東、伊吹山のふもとにある。小さな縫製工房として始まり、日本では寝袋で知られるようになった。名前はヒマラヤの大きな山のひとつ、ナンガ・パルバットから借りたものだ。

Down, washed at home
What sets NANGA apart is the down itself. The company buys raw down from Europe, then has it washed in Japan before it goes into a jacket. The best grade is Hungarian silver goose down with 930 fill power. There is also a water-repellent down with 770 fill power that is meant to «let moisture through, but not absorb water».
Was NANGA besonders macht, sind die Daunen selbst. Die Firma kauft Rohdaunen in Europa und lässt sie in Japan waschen, bevor sie in eine Jacke kommen. Die beste Qualität ist ungarische Silbergänsedaune mit 930 Fill Power. Dazu gibt es eine wasserabweisende Daune mit 770 Fill Power, die «Feuchtigkeit durchlassen, aber kein Wasser aufnehmen» soll.
Ce qui distingue NANGA, c'est le duvet lui-même. L'entreprise achète du duvet brut en Europe, puis le fait laver au Japon avant qu'il n'entre dans une veste. La meilleure qualité est un duvet d'oie argentée de Hongrie à 930 cuin. Il existe aussi un duvet déperlant à 770 cuin, censé « laisser passer l'humidité, mais ne pas absorber l'eau ».
NANGAを特別にしているのはダウンそのものだ。ヨーロッパから原毛を買い付け、ジャケットに使う前に日本で洗浄する。最高グレードは930フィルパワーのハンガリー産シルバーグースダウン。さらに770フィルパワーの撥水ダウンもあり、「湿気は通すが、水は吸わない」ことを目指している。

From the mountain to the city
