Asia's mountain heavyweights: Goldwin and Kailas
One started as a knitting mill in Toyama, the other on the rock in Guangzhou. Two big Asian outdoor companies, and what they tell us about how Asia gears up.

Not every brand worth knowing is small. Goldwin in Japan and Kailas in China are big companies by now, but both have stories that say a lot about how outdoor culture grew up in Asia. One came from craft and ski racing, the other from climbing.
Goldwin: from a knitting mill to the slopes and the city
Goldwin began in 1950 as a small knit fabric factory in Oyabe, Toyama Prefecture, and launched its own label in 1958. Its ski sweaters soon became a symbol on Japanese slopes, and from 1987 Goldwin dressed the Swedish national ski team. The feedback from top athletes went straight back into the products.

In 2016 Goldwin started a lifestyle collection built around city life with weekend escapes into nature. The current outerwear, such as the Crystallite Down Parka in Pertex Quantum ripstop, shows that sporting precision in a calm, refined way.
Good to know: Goldwin's European online store has been temporarily closed since 24 October 2026.
Kailas: born on the rock
Kailas takes its name from Mount Kailash in Tibet. Founded in 2003, it calls itself China’s most technical outdoor company and works with the Chinese Climbing Team and the IFSC. The headquarters in Guangzhou has climbing walls built into the office.

Kailas also builds the scene itself: it started the Yangshuo Climbing Festival and Rock Searching, a project that, according to the agency Hot Pot China, has funded nearly 2,000 free climbing routes across the country. Its FUGA trail running line has made the brand known far beyond China.
What the two have in common
Both grew out of sport, not fashion, and both now shape how a whole country dresses for the mountains. Goldwin shows how far Japanese refinement can take technical clothing. Kailas shows how fast China’s outdoor scene is catching up.
Your turn: have you worn either brand on Swiss trails?

Was die beiden verbindet

Goldwin:
Goldwin
Kailas:
Kailas
